Learn to Sail Programme
Rotorua Yacht Club follows the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail syllabus. Our children's programme begins in simple, robust Optimist boats, provided by Rotorua Yacht Club. Parents are under no obligation to buy a boat before starting the course. Adult courses are also available. If you don't own a boat, you can sail a club Topaz or Laser. Here are this years course dates: Level 1 - Thurs 2 November to Sun 17 December 2023 Level 2 - Thurs 8 February to Sun 24 March 2024 Level 3 - Mon 9 October to Sun 17 December 2023; and Sun 11 February 2024 to Sun 7 April 2024 Learn to Sail Session Times: We run Level 1 and Level 2 sessions on Sundays and Thursdays (weather dependent): Sundays (9am - 12 noon):
Thursdays (4:30pm - 7pm):
Level 3 session times: Monday Night Training: 4:15pm – rigging 4:50pm – briefing 7:00pm – session finishes. Sunday Afternoon Club Events: We encourage all Level 3 sailors to take part in Sunday club sailing. These sessions start at 2pm, unless stated otherwise in the RYC Sailing Calendar. There are several trophies specifically for youth and adults, so there is a good chance of taking home a prize, just by turning up regularly. |
Costs
Levels 1 & 2 cost $135 each, including boat hire and coaching. Sailors who sign up for levels 1 & 2 in the same season are entitled to free Rotorua Yacht Club membership for that season. Level 3 costs $100 per season, plus annual membership for sailors using their own boat; or $165 per season for those using a club boat. For safety reasons, the organisers reserve the right to pair youth in double-handed boats in stronger winds, or to develop different skills. This will be at no extra charge. Register below to reserve your place on the boat, or Contact Us to find out more. Courses are limited to the first 10 registered participants. Our Learn to Sail Level 1 programme is now full. However, if you would like to go on the waitlist we will contact you if a space becomes available.
